Where U.S. philanthropy sits, state by state: foundation counts, giving, and assets from 2015 to 2023, with county and metro detail, program-area allocation, and recipient-level grant flows as they come online.
Live layers query the IRS Business Master File and Form 990 e-file aggregates. Multi-year series (2015-2023) are representative estimates anchored to public magnitudes, clearly badged, pending the verified 990-PF build. All dollar figures are inflation-adjusted to 2023 dollars using the CPI-U annual average; a sidebar option switches to nominal dollars as filed, and the downloadable CSV carries both series. Population denominators use the 2020 Decennial Census and 2023 vintage estimates.
Sub-state figures allocate state totals by resident-population share across a ZIP→county→CBSA crosswalk (73 metros, 258 counties, real Census populations). They are population-anchored estimates until foundation-level geocoding ships; the giving-gap view compares per-resident receipts against the state average.
Badged estimates should not be quoted as exact figures. Recipient grant flows are illustrative until the 990-PF Schedule I ingest is live. Verified per-organization numbers come with our Funder Intelligence Briefing; notable-foundation names are real, with no dollar figures attributed to any single named organization.
